The Steps to Calculate Ocean Freight

Winsail Logistics Shipping Freight Calculation Steps

(1) Select the relevant freight rate standard (shipping company’s freight rate book);
(2) According to the name of the goods, find the freight calculation standard (BASIS) and class (CLASS) in the cargo classification table;
(3) Find the corresponding route, port of departure, port of destination in the basic rate part of the grade rate table, and find the basic freight rate by grade;
(4) Find out all surcharge items and amounts (or percentages) and currency types that are receivable (paid) from the surcharge part;
(5) Calculate the actual freight rate according to the basic freight rate and surcharge;

Container Ocean Freight
1. Divided into two categories, one is to follow the calculation method of general cargo freight, that is, each freight ton is used as the unit, and the other is to use each container as the charging unit.

(1) Calculation of LCL freight charges

Any cargo that is less than the volume or quality of the whole container of goods requires two or more batches of cargo to be packed in one box, which is called LCL cargo.
Generally, it consists of the basic rate for groceries plus a surcharge.
1) Basic rate: refer to the traditional freight rate for general cargo, and use the freight as the calculation unit, and the grade rate is adopted on most routes.
2) Surcharges: Some surcharges related to container cargo transportation will be added.

(2) Calculation of FCL freight charges

Except for a few shipping companies that still use the above method to calculate the freight, most companies have adopted the box-based billing method and implemented the package rate.
Container shipping consists of basic shipping and additional charges. When a batch of goods reaches 75% of the volume of one or several containers or 95% of the load quality of the container, it can be regarded as a full container of goods.
The billing in the form of FCL transportation is based on each container, that is, the packing rate is applicable.

There are three forms of packing rate.

(1) FAK packing rate: FAK packing rate (freight for all kinds). That is to say, each container is not subdivided into the cargo category, and the amount of cargo (within the quality limit) is only charged according to the uniformly stipulated rate of the container type, also known as the uniform package rate.

(2) FCS packing rate (freight for class): the packing rate based on different cargo grades. The classification of general cargo in containers is the same as that of general cargo transportation, which is divided into 1 to 20 levels.
When using this rate to calculate the freight, first check the grade according to the name of the goods, and then look up the table according to the route, the classification of the goods, the handover method and the size of the container, and then the corresponding freight of each box can be obtained.

(3) FCB packing rate: (freight for class or basis). Rates based on different cargo classes or categories and calculation standards.
When using this rate to calculate the freight, first of all, it is necessary to find out not only the category and grade of the goods, but also whether the goods should be calculated by volume or weight, and then find out each container according to the grade, calculation standard, handover method, and container type. Shipping costs for the box.
