New, used, petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles can be shipped from China to the UAE by RoRo, container or special-project services. Jebel Ali is the main gateway for Dubai and regional re-export, while Khalifa Port often suits Abu Dhabi and KEZAD.
Before booking, decide whether the vehicle is for UAE registration or free-zone re-export. China export eligibility, carrier acceptance, customs clearance and registration are separate decisions. See Vehicle Shipping from China for the broader process.
Quick Answer: Confirm the intended use, UAE importer, VIN status, conformity route, steering position, damage history and registration eligibility before purchase. Arrival at a UAE port does not automatically make a vehicle eligible for road registration.
Can the Car Be Imported and Registered in the UAE?
Local Use Versus Free-Zone Re-Export
A mainland vehicle for personal use, dealer sale or fleet operation normally requires import declaration, valuation, taxes, a Vehicle Clearance Certificate, conformity checks, inspection, insurance and registration.
A vehicle may instead enter JAFZA or another free zone for storage or re-export. Free-zone entry does not grant road-registration eligibility. Moving it into the mainland triggers the applicable customs, tax and compliance procedures.
Personal Versus Commercial Import
Individuals may import new or used cars with documents such as the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and passport or Emirates ID.
Dealers, showrooms and fleets should use the correct trade activity and Customs Business Code. Commercial quantities should not be declared as personal belongings. Quantity, frequency and intended use can affect how Customs treats the shipment.
Four Separate Approvals
| Approval layer | Main question |
|---|---|
| China export eligibility | Can the vehicle and exporter complete the China procedure? |
| Carrier acceptance | Will the carrier, vessel and terminals accept it? |
| UAE customs and compliance | Can it be declared and released under the intended route? |
| Inspection and registration | Can it obtain registration in the target emirate? |
Carrier acceptance and customs release do not guarantee vehicle registration.
UAE Vehicle Eligibility Checks Before Purchase
Is There a Vehicle Age Limit?
The official materials reviewed do not show one federal five-year limit for every ordinary imported light vehicle. This does not mean any old car can be registered.
Check the VIN, model year, condition, steering position, modifications and final-emirate inspection rules. Vehicles over 30 years old may follow a classic route, while commercial vehicles can have separate age conditions.
VIN and MoIAT Status Check
Check the VIN before payment. Review ownership, registration, accident or auction history, odometer, recalls, airbags, warning lights and available conformity documents.
MoIAT provides a Product Status Statement for Used Imported Vehicles to confirm whether a used import can enter the traffic-registration system. Its Product Label Card addresses specified serious damage categories.
Useful evidence includes a VIN report, repair history, photographs, EV battery report and seller declaration.
Prohibited or High-Risk Used Vehicles
MoIAT identifies burnt, scrapped, flood-damaged, disassembled and damaged-beyond-repair vehicles, plus major manufacturing defects.
Do not treat every minor repair as the same risk. Use the VIN result, condition evidence and MoIAT statement. Free-zone re-export acceptance does not establish local registration eligibility.
Right-Hand-Drive Vehicles
Right-hand-drive vehicles may be transported for re-export, but Dubai RTA generally does not register ordinary examples. Classic vehicles may follow an exception route. Check the final emirate before purchase.
GSO, MoIAT and Local Vehicle Inspection Explained
New Vehicles and Model Conformity
Commercial imports of new Chinese models may involve GSO type conformity, MoIAT attestation and UAE technical requirements. Manufacturer, model version, VIN data and test reports must match.
A seller’s “GCC spec” claim is not enough. New models, used imports, EVs and modified vehicles may follow different conformity routes.
Used Imported Vehicle Verification
The Product Status Statement addresses traffic-system eligibility. The Product Label Card addresses specified severe damage categories. Confirm the applicable service before shipment.
Technical Inspection by Emirate
A Vehicle Clearance Certificate supports registration but does not replace inspection. Dubai and Abu Dhabi use their respective traffic services, while modified vehicles may need extra review.
A Dubai import may require a Vehicle Clearance Certificate from Dubai Customs after clearance. It does not guarantee inspection approval.
Also verify lighting, instruments, charging compatibility, software, spare parts and after-sales support.
RoRo or Container Shipping from China to the UAE?
RoRo Shipping
RoRo commonly suits vehicles that can start, steer and brake safely, including new cars, accepted used vehicles, SUVs, pickups and commercial vehicles.
Acceptance depends on the carrier, vessel and terminals. Used cars, EVs and non-running units may face restrictions. Undeclared goods are normally prohibited, while fuel, battery charge, keys, alarms, leakage and driving condition must meet terminal rules.
RoRo freight does not automatically include full insurance, and space must be confirmed for the voyage. See RoRo Car Shipping from China.
Container Shipping
Containers may suit one or a few cars, high-value vehicles, enclosed handling or routes with limited RoRo service. Approved spare parts must be declared and independently secured.
Loading requires wheel chocks, blocking, lashing, correct weight distribution and VGM. A 40HQ cannot be promised to hold a fixed number of cars without a model-specific plan. EVs still require dangerous-goods approval.
See Container Car Shipping from China.
Non-Running and Oversized Vehicles
Flat rack, Mafi, breakbulk or project transport may be required. Provide dimensions, weight, ground clearance, running condition, lifting and lashing points, and photographs.

Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port: Which UAE Port Should You Choose?
Jebel Ali Port
Jebel Ali usually suits Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, the Northern Emirates, JAFZA storage and regional re-export. It handles RoRo and containerized vehicles.
Confirm the actual Chinese loading port, vessel or transshipment plan, vehicle acceptance and whether the UAE declaration is for the mainland or a free zone.
Khalifa Port
Khalifa Port often suits Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, KEZAD, dealerships and fleets. Current PCTC calls, container services, EV acceptance and inland arrangements must be checked per shipment.
Port-Selection Formula
UAE port choice = current vessel service + shipping method + importer customs registration + final emirate + inland cost + handling capability.
The lowest ocean freight may not produce the lowest delivered cost. The bill of lading should state the actual Port of Discharge and terminal.

Documents Required to Ship Cars from China to the UAE
Requirements vary by vehicle, exporter, carrier, importer and intended use.
China Export Documents
These may include:
- Invoice, sales contract and VIN list

The importer or broker handles valuation, duty, VAT, inspection, release and the Vehicle Clearance Certificate.
Step 9: Inspect, Insure and Register
Complete local inspection, insurance, traffic-file procedures, Mulkiya and number plates.
Shipping Electric Cars from China to the UAE
UAE conformity and ocean dangerous-goods approval are separate. The importer should confirm the MoIAT route, model reports, charging interface and technical requirements.
From January 1, 2026, a lithium-ion battery-powered BEV is generally UN3556 under IMDG Code 42-24. Lithium-metal and sodium-ion vehicles use UN3557 and UN3558. HEVs and PHEVs with an internal-combustion engine are generally assessed under the relevant UN3166 entry.
There is no single IMDG SOC percentage for every complete vehicle. Carriers may impose stricter SOC, age, inspection and battery-report rules. Used EVs need additional review, while damaged, flooded or thermally unstable batteries may be rejected.
A UAE conformity document does not replace carrier approval. See Electric Vehicle Shipping from China.
Car Shipping Cost from China to the UAE
Use a complete cost formula:
China pickup + vehicle yard + export documents + customs filing + RoRo or container freight + DG/OOG charges + insurance + UAE terminal handling + customs duty + VAT + conformity checks + VCC + inspection + storage + registration support + inland delivery.
For a quote, provide the vehicle quantity, make, model, VIN, year, condition, powertrain, dimensions, weight, pickup city, UAE port, customs route, final city and cargo-ready date.
General customs duty is commonly 5% of CIF value. VAT is generally 5%, but this should not be simplified into a guaranteed 10% total. Calculation bases differ, customs may reassess the vehicle value, VAT recovery may apply to registered businesses, and free-zone re-export differs from mainland import.
Transit Time and Current Route Risks
Total lead time includes pickup, export preparation, licensing, carrier approval, waiting for departure, ocean transit, transshipment, UAE clearance, inspection, registration and inland delivery.
Risks include Strait of Hormuz security conditions, booking or port-call changes, war-risk surcharges, RoRo space shortages, delayed EV approval, customs valuation, yard congestion, storage, demurrage, detention and late conformity documents.
Booking Notice: Route availability, port calls, dangerous-goods acceptance, freight rates and surcharges must be reconfirmed when booking. Operational conditions may change after publication.
How Winsail Coordinates Car Shipping to the UAE

Winsail does not issue export licences or conformity certificates, approve dangerous goods, or guarantee clearance, inspection, registration, vessel space or fixed transit time.
FAQ
How much does it cost to ship a car from China to the UAE?
Cost depends on the model, dimensions, powertrain, shipping method, pickup point, destination port and customs route. Duty, VAT, inspection, storage and registration are separate from freight. Current space, rates and surcharges must be reconfirmed before booking.
How long does car shipping from China to Dubai take?
Timing depends on export preparation, carrier approval, sailing frequency, transshipment, customs and registration. Ocean transit is only one part of the schedule. RoRo space, EV approval, route changes and missing documents may extend the total lead time.
Is there an age limit for importing used cars into the UAE?
There is no single federal five-year limit applying to every ordinary imported light vehicle. Eligibility depends on VIN status, condition, steering position, MoIAT requirements and the final emirate’s inspection rules. Older vehicles may require a classic-vehicle route.
Can a damaged or salvage car be imported into the UAE?
It depends on the damage category and intended use. Burnt, flooded, scrapped, disassembled or damaged-beyond-repair vehicles face serious restrictions. Minor repaired damage should be assessed separately using the VIN and applicable MoIAT result.
Can a right-hand-drive car be registered in Dubai?
Ordinary right-hand-drive vehicles are generally not eligible for normal Dubai registration, although classic vehicles may follow an exception route. Carrier or free-zone acceptance for re-export does not establish mainland registration eligibility.
Is Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port better for car shipping?
Jebel Ali usually suits Dubai, Sharjah, the Northern Emirates and JAFZA re-export. Khalifa Port often suits Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and KEZAD. Choose according to current vessel service, importer registration, final city, inland cost and handling capability.
Is RoRo or container shipping better for cars going to the UAE?
